At long last, after 100 hours of work over 6 months, the Mardi Gras drawing is complete! This piece is based on three photos taken by my grandfather in Galveston while browsing the Mardi Gras floats ready to go in the staging area before the big parade in 1923. The industrious folks who built the floats pose proudly with the huge monster that leads the frightful menagerie.
From the Houston Post, February 29, 1924:
“Last year’s Mardi Gras parade, which included 17 monster floats, dipicted scenes in Dante’s Inferno. More than 60,000 persons witnessed the procession. More than 1000 persons took part in the parade.”
